Eclipse

  • A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth is between the sun and the moon. Ie, the sun, earth and moon are in a straight line with the earth in between the sun and the moon.In it, the shadow of the earth is cast on the moon.
  • A total lunar eclipse occurs if the moon passes through the umbra. Since the moon does not receive any light from the sun, it does not reflect any light. Hence it is not visible at all.
  • A partial lunar eclipses occurs if the moon is not completely in the umbra. It then receives some light from the sun which it reflects to the earth and makes itself partially visible.
  • A lunar eclipse can occur only on full-moon night. However, it does not take place on every full moon because the sun, the earth and the moon in general, are not in the same plane.
  • A solar eclipse occurs when the sun, earth and moon are in a straight line with the moon positioned in between the sun and the earth.
  • In it, the shadow of the moon is cast on the earth.
  • A total solar eclipse is seen from the umbra region on earth. A partial solar eclipse is seen from the penumbra region.
  • On certain occurrences of the new moon, the moon is at so great a distance from the earth that the apex of the moon’s umbral cone may not touch the earth’s surface. In such cases, from a small region of the earth’s surface directly below the moon’s umbral apex, the sun will appear as a black circular disc with a ring of light, ie, annular ring. It is known as Annular Eclipse.
  • A solar eclipse can occur only on a new moon day.
  • During a lunar eclipse, it is the moon which comes under the shadow of the earth but during a solar eclipse, it is the observer on the earth who comes under the shadow of the moon cast on the earth.
